Powering cruise vessels

German energy expert, Stemmann-Technik, has completed onshore power supply projects for cruise ship terminals at the ports of Hamburg and Shanghai and supplied a charging system for a new electric ferry.

At the Hamburg Cruise Terminal, Stemmann-Technik has installed an onshore power supply system for cruise ships which is unique in its dimensions and design.

The power and data transmission to the cruise ship is supplied by means of an onshore power supply-vehicle which can be moved along a underground cable channel with a length of 300m.

The underground supply ensures that the medium voltage cable is not damaged and that the port operations are not impacted by cables lying about.

Corresponding to the requirements of the type of ship, the system transmits different charging frequencies and voltages.

Wusongkou cruise terminal at the port of Shanghai now has an onshore power supply system which is customised especially for its own use.

Stemmann-Technik’s power supply-vehicle can be moved to the pier by a battery-operated drive and then it can be coupled to the underground connection system. A flexible travel distance of up to 70m is possible.

This system has a tidal range compensation and can, corresponding to the requirements of each particular ship, supply different frequencies and voltages.

In related news, Stemmann-Technik has also supplied an ePower charging system for an electric ferry.

Stemmann-Technik’s charging system has an operation voltage of 690V – 6.6kV and can supply up to a 4500 continuous current. It has a connecting time of just seven seconds and connecting and disconnecting is fully automated.

The closed tower design protects the system components against external influences and fits neatly into the mooring area.

Connection takes just seven seconds and the charging system is able to compensate the tidal range and any movement of the ferry.
