Jurong pursues alternative energy research
Jurong Port has inked an agreement with academia to jointly research and develop alternative energy applications.
The MoU with Nanyang Technological University also includes research into smart multi-energy systems and environmental monitoring and will allow research projects and testbed solutions to be conducted as part of Jurong Port’s Living Lab programme.
“We are delighted with this partnership with NTU. It forms the inaugural component of Jurong Port’s Living Lab programme to test bed solutions for our journey towards a ‘Next Generation Multipurpose Port’’, said Mr Ooi Boon Hoe, chief executive officer, Jurong Port.
The MoU, covering a period of five years, will also have both parties jointly conducting a mutual exchange of expertise including staff secondment programmes.
It also includes the organisation of events to promote greater environmental sustainability through maritime outreach activities and thought leadership.
In the near term, Jurong Port and NTU will focus on the port’s energy monitoring and optimisation via a Smart Multi-Energy Systems and explore various environmentally sustainable solutions for multipurpose port operations.
NTU will also explore viable solutions and technologies under Jurong Port’s Living Lab programme. This includes testbedding alternative energy sources like biofuels, LNG and hydrogen fuel for maritime operations.
Other components of Jurong Port’s Living Lab programme include collaboration with industry partners to develop and test solutions in areas such as multipurpose port productivity, Internet of Things, data and visual analytics and safety and security.
Together with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and other stakeholders, Jurong Port’s Living Lab programme aims to play an important role to encourage greater innovation in the maritime and port industry.
