Kris Fumberger, sustainability manager at RightShip, said that the company’s long-term strategy for sustainability and environmental performance fits well with the goals identified by the SSI.

“RightShip believes that through cross-industry collaboration we will have greater ability to effect the environmental and social impact of the global shipping industry. We are very excited to be joining an organisation that shares this common goal with us,” he said.

RightShip has developed a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rating (GHG Rating), which is now used on one in every five vessels chartered worldwide.

The GHG Rating compares the theoretical CO2 emissions of ships of a similar size and type, increasing transparency and allowing charterers to factor sustainability into their vessel selection process.

A carbon-neutral organisation, RightShip also offers customers the ability to measure and offset the carbon emissions of their own shipping operations.

Ian Petty, general manager, SSI, said: “Since its inception, the SSI has been bringing together influential companies and organisations from the global shipping sector in order to make sustainability mainstream. We are therefore delighted that RightShip has chosen to join the SSI.”

“Its two core principles of maritime safety and emissions reduction reflect critical areas of the SSI’s Vision to 2040, including the dramatic reduction of GHG emissions, and the provision of healthy, safe and secure environments for those working within the shipping industry.” RightShip joins other SSI members, including Maersk, ABN-AMRO, AkzoNobel, Wärtsila, Bunge, Cargill, China Navigation, Lloyd’s Register, IMC and U-Ming.
