KONE NETS AFRICAN ORDERS
Konecranes has confirmed reachstacker orders from three African port operators. Six units will be supplied to the Namibian Port Authorities, three to Kenya Ports Authority and four to Ghana''s Meridian Ports Services. The total value of the three orders is approximately $7.1m.

New grain and fertiliser terminal at Djibouti
A new grain and fertiliser terminal was inaugurated at Djibouti at the end of 2006 following the award by Compagnie Djiboutienne de Gestion du Terminal Vraquier of a contract to Vigan SA in Belgium as prime contractor for the delivery of the equipment for the terminal.

Algeria mulls Mediterranean hub port plan
The Algerian government is contemplating the construction of a new port, which would help reduce congestion at existing facilities,many of which are operating at 75% capacity. Although no definitive site has yet been identified, the favourite is Issers, where a 600,000 teu/year terminal could be built.

KPA EQUIPMENT BUY
Kenya Ports Authority has acquired new handling equipment worth ¢ 3m, which forms part of a ¢ 5.44m modernisation programme begun in 2002.This includes 20 terminal tractors, five FLTs and a set of pollution-control equipment. A further 25 terminal tractors entered service in 2003-2005.

MOMBASA PRIVATISATION TEAM
The Kenyan government has put together a committee that will oversee the privatisation of the container terminal at the port of Mombasa. However, the rest of the port will remain within public sector ownership.

Durban shippers' congestion despair
Shippers, fed up with delays in container processing at Durban Container Terminal, have threatened to impose a surcharge. Just last month, an MOL ship was delayed by 200 hours, however the average wait is around three days.

Berth repairs at Dar as privatisation stalls
Handling activities at berths six and nine at the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania have been suspended to enable repair work to take place on corroded concrete piles. This should be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2007 and will cost an estimated $2.3m.
