Stevedores will be encouraged to invest in terminals and maximise the use of existing facilities as a result of increased competition in Australia’s container ports, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has declared.

In its annual container stevedoring report, the ACCC said that with demand at major ports forecast to almost triple during the next two decades, the challenge was to improve productivity to underpin Australia's economic performance. Competition was therefore important as a driving force to stimulate investment in new capacity and get the best out of resources.

Next year, Hutchison will begin stevedoring operations in Brisbane and Sydney.
