Global engineering giant, Cavotec, is to host a seminar at the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) 28th World Ports Conference this week on how innovative technologies are helping ports to cut down on emissions.

The focus will be the environmental, safety and efficiency aspects of automation at ports and how this can be achieved.
Cavotec will of course be promoting its E³ berth automation technologies which incorporate MoorMaster automated mooring, shore-to-ship Alternative Maritime Power (AMP), E-RTG power supply systems, Panzerbelt cable protection systems, power chains and connectors, radio remote controls and motorised and spring driven cable reels.
There will be presentations from leading experts on their experiences of reducing emissions in ports, including Michael Christensen, deputy executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, an early adopter of AMP shore-to-ship systems.
Cavotec says that its AMP systems are helping ports around the world to reduce emissions from ships when in port. The first AMP application was installed in Sweden in 1984, and similar systems have since been adopted at ports in Asia, across northern Europe and in North America.
AMP systems are built into the quayside to enable vessels to connect to grid generated electrical power quickly and easily.

Cavotec has experienced a flurry of orders over the last year for AMP systems on the US west coast, as well as in Canada, Europe and the Far East.
The company says that around 30% of all newbuild containerships that will be in service by the end of 2015 will be AMP compatible.
