Ecoslops, which uses innovative micro-refining technology to turn hydrocarbon residuals into new products, wanted to demonstrate that the new site at La Mède in Provence stands up to its strict target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

French consulting firm Carbone 4 showed that for a production unit the size of La Mède's (30,000 tonnes/year), Ecoslops' hydrocarbon production process could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by three times compared to the traditional process based on crude oil extraction.

Moreover, it demonstrated that Ecoslops technology improves hydrocarbon material footprint, as the raw oil material stock is not wasted.

The study shows that the La Mède production site alone will allow to reduce emissions by 13 ktCO2eq per year.

Transparency

Ecoslops' economic revalorisation aims to give financial incentives to ship-owners and other residual producers to treat residual waste in a more transparent way, helping to avoid illicit dumping of toxic by-products into the sea.

The company's first slops recycling site began operations at Portugal’s Port of Sinès in 2015.

Several other projects have already been the subject of the signing of a protocol and are under development in Marseille, Antwerp and in the Suez Canal region.

Negotiations are also underway with a number of other partners, including shipowners and port authorities, particularly in Africa and Asia.
