Empower leaders to make safety breakthroughs
Ports need to face up to the challenge of empowering leaders throughout the ports sector and supporting them when their people are making health and safety assessments and raising concerns, a safety specialist has urged.
Richard Steele, Port Skills and Safety (PSS) chief executive, said to Port Strategy that the industry must support its people, across the entire industry at all levels, to be safety leaders to raise health and safety standards across the sector.
Mr Steele noted that PSS is now gathering much more data around health and accidents — including what types of accidents are happening, where they’re occurring and their frequency — on a quarterly basis throughout the ports industry.
“That really is to try and give us much faster access to data to understand where the challenges are and get up those as they’re emerging and as they’re developing,” he said.
“We need to better understand how healthy our industry is in terms of the health of our workforce, and that’s all about understanding that as a sector, not just as individual organisations.”
