An engine prototype has been successfully tested as part of the development of an LNG-fuelled straddle carrier to help cut operational emissions.

APMT Barcelona told GreenPort that testing had been positive for the engine protype. APMT Barcelona has been working with the Port of Barcelona, LNG services provider HAM, technology provider IDIADA and Naturgy Iberia to convert the straddle carriers' two 150kW diesel-based motor engines to natural gas. The machine will be equipped with two 500 litre tanks for LNG supply to the motors.

“Currently, engine prototype has been successfully tested at IDIADA’s installation. In the following weeks this motor will be installed in the Straddle Carrier, along with sensors and other elements needed,” said APMT Barcelona, which will compare the emissions of the retrofitted machine to the same machine using diesel.

The first tests of the completed straddle carrier are expected to be carried out during the first quarter of 2020.

The straddle carrier is being developed as part of the CORE LNGas hive project and APMT Barcelona is collaborating closely with project leader Enagás. This project has 42 members, including several ports on the Iberian Peninsula.
