Lithuania has reached a significant milestone in green fuel production as MT Group, an EPC contractor specialising in European energy projects, inks a deal with the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority.

This major partnership will establish the first hydrogen production and refuelling station in the Baltic States, with a projected value of €10.5 million.

“The Port of Klaipeda, as a strategic transportation hub, has great potential to become a flagship of green technologies in the Baltic region,” said Mindaugas Zakaras, chief executive of MT Group.

“This pilot project will serve as a benchmark for other hydrogen initiatives in the region.”

MT Group is a founding partner in Green Energy Park Global, focused on producing cost-competitive green hydrogen to support Europe’s decarbonisation efforts.

The group will handle the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the hydrogen station, which will use electrolysis with a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyser to produce green hydrogen.

Preparatory work has already begun, with construction expected to start in 2025. The station aims to generate approximately 500 kg of hydrogen daily, totalling around 127 tonnes annually.

The hydrogen produced will serve multiple purposes, including fuelling port operations, and supporting rail and road transport, including private vehicles. Future plans include refuelling commercial ships, aligning with the increasing demand for alternative fuels.

This project supports Lithuania’s 2021-2030 Energy Development Program, which promotes advanced technologies and reduces fossil fuel dependency.

“We are determined not only to create energy that will reduce our environmental impact, but also to contribute to the development of clean energy in Lithuania and Europe by empowering hydrogen as a sustainable energy source for our ships, transport and industry.”
