Cepsa has supplied second-generation biofuels (2G) to Japan’s NYK Line using its innovative hybrid barge, marking a significant step in port biofuels and decarbonisation efforts.
The delivery of 1,030 tonnes of B24 biofuel to the NYK Line’s Atlas Leader was conducted at the Port of Algeciras using Cepsa’s electric port hybrid barge, Bahía Levante.
“As the shipping industry steps up its pursuit of decarbonization solutions, we are determined to maintain our leadership in marine fuel supply, offering increasingly sustainable solutions,” said Samir Fernández, director of Marine Fuel Solutions at Cepsa.
”The supply to NYK emphasises our efforts to support decarbonisation across both customer and operational fronts.”
Cleaner bunkering
Cepsa’s hybrid barge, powered by batteries and 100% renewable diesel, reduced the carbon footprint of the operation.
During the delivery, the vessel used renewable diesel at sea and battery power while docked, highlighting Cepsa’s commitment to minimising emissions in maritime operations.
Cepsa said that second-generation biofuels can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% throughout their lifecycle, making them crucial for the decarbonisation of hard-to-electrify sectors, such as maritime transport.
In addition, the use of electric port hybrid barges and sustainable biofuels ensures that shipping companies, like NYK Line, stay ahead of International Maritime Organization (IMO) decarbonisation targets.
Cepsa’s long-term ambition is to become a leader in port biofuels and sustainable mobility by 2030, further advancing the global maritime industry’s energy transition.
