Environmental responsibility at two German ports has been recognised with certification by Lloyds Register in accordance with the PERS (Port Environmental Review System) management standard.
A key part of the certification process for the bremenports-managed ports of Bremen (Bremen and Bremerhaven ports) is their Environmental Report 2020. The publication of the report proves the high level of transparency with which the ports communicate their green plans . In addition to updated environmental key performance indicators, the Environmental Report also contains detailed information about legal and political environmental requirements.
“We are both proud and pleased to present our outstanding environmental performance to the public for the fifth time,” said bremenports managing director, Robert Howe.
In June, Bremen’s Senate resolved to make shore power supply widely available at the ports of Bremen. By 2023, eight stationary shore power supply facilities will be provided for marine shipping plus another two connections for inland shipping. From 2021 it will be compulsory for inland shipping to use the shore power connections that are already available.
In addition to shore power investment, air quality is important to the ports. As well as reducing emissions from vessels, vehicles and machinery, a government programme to measure the emissions of cruise vessels concluded that there is no evidence that cruise liners have any significant effect on the air quality in Bremerhaven outside the port area. Tests also show that the ports of Bremen achieve 99% compliance with European legislation on the use of low-sulphur fuel in shipping. Recycling waste, including waste water from ships, also forms part of the environmental plan for the ports.
