In a technical session at Posidonia 2014 this week, Evoqua explored type-approved, proven technology and the process to meeting IMO ballast water requirements.
Presenting its SeaCURE ballast water management system (BWMS), the company explained the process behind it – a patented process that first injects biocide into ballast sea water before it reaches the large surface filter intakes to reduce the growth of marine organisms that can clog the filters.
Next, Chloropac concentric tubular electrodes (CTE) generate sodium hypochlorite from the natural salinity in sea water which eliminates the need to buy biocides and store or replenish them onboard.
Evoqua’s system also features low energy requirements and low maintenance costs due to the self-cleaning feature of the CTE technology.
The efficacy of the SeaCURE BWMS is in accordance with IMO Convention D-2 regulations and exceeds the G8 and G9 guidelines for approval of BWMS.
In February 2014, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany granted type approval for SeaCURE which concludes the international approval process that began with basic approval and then final approval by the IMO in 2012.
Testing of Evoqua’s SeaCURE was completed at three separate installations each with widely differing ecosystems.
The company says it’s now looking to achieve US Coast Guard Type Approval.
