The Dubai-based operator has also established a major presence at Maputo in Mozambique, where it expects to go head-to-head with Durban for a slice of the lucrative southern Africa market.
According to acknowledged regional expert, Steve Cameron of Cameron Maritime Resources: “AP Moller, along with the other organisations that operate both liner services and terminals, appears to recognise that there is more money to be made from operating terminals rather than liner operations. Its initial bid for Nigeria was therefore two or three times higher than that entered by the next two highest bidders. The group put a different value on the terminals than the others, because it could see the strategic value of them for its liner operations.”
