That’s the view of Peder Sondergaard, chief operating offficer of APM Terminals, who says container terminal operators should be concerned that volumes and vessels get larger year by year, but terminal expansions are measured in decades from planning to the first vessel coming alongside.
Speaking at the Terminal Operators’ Conference in Amsterdam this year he called for the development of existing terminals that would be safer, more secure and environmentally-friendly.
And it’s these factors that will steer the way APM invests in future. “Increasingly our buying decisions will be based on developments to maximise capacity utilisation, focus the design on safety, and reduce energy consumption and emissions,” he says.
