First phase investment will require US$100m to develop roads, a 600 metre long quay, a reservoir, a bonded warehouse and upgraded power supply, allowing the facility to open by 2007.
Subsequent phases will add up to 41 berths with a combined capacity of 17mTEUs by 2020. Initial investment will come from the government although the private sector could have a role to play in developing later phases through the use of BOT contracts.
The port itself will be located in Van Phong Bay some 70km north of Nha Trang. It will have the deepest draught in Vietnam allowing ships drawing 22-32 metres to call. By 2005, the Vietnamese government forecasts the port will be handling up to 4.4mTEUs rising to between 23-30mTEUs by 2010.
