Wave beacon at Nelson

An advanced wind and wave informationgathering light beacon has been installed 4km outside Port Nelsons shipping channel.

Both shipping companies had been banned from exchanging cargo at the port over recent months – MSC on a new service from Australia and Maersk attempting to reinstate a former P&O Nedlloyd service from New Zealand.

Standing 12 metres above the high-water mark, the beacon is providing real-time information on tide height, wave height and interval and wind speed, and enabling pilots to determine the under-keel clearance of vessels arriving and departing the tidal port.
