Stevedores back to work at Lyttelton

Full operations returned to Lyttelton port on Monday this week, as work recommenced following the five-day strike of members of the Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMTU).

Asked on Wednesday if there had been any progress in the industrial dispute with Lyttelton Port Company (LPC), RMTU South Island organiser John Kerr said informal discussions had occurred and that there had been “some correspondence but no formal negotiations”.

“We are waiting on LPC to say they are willing to meet and when,” he told Port Strategy.

Mr Kerr said no further strike notices had currently been issued, while adding: “If there aren’t any developments soon, the likelihood of us issuing notice increases.”

During the strike the RMTU undertook a leaflet campaign in the neighbourhoods of directors of LPC as well as having some of its about 200 members temporarily blockade road and rail tunnels which link the port to the rest of the region.
