Status quo at Yemen ports despite missile attack

A missile attack on a tanker proceeding in the Southern Red Sea has had no effect on the working status of ports in Yemen or the flow of ships in the region, according to an update from protection and indemnity insurer Gard.

The Port of Mokha, Ras Isa Marine Terminal (Safer), Ras Isa Petroleum Products Reception Facility and Balhaf LNG Terminal are closed, according to the update from April 6.

Meanwhile, the ports of Aden, Mukalla, Nishtun, Saleef and Hodeidah, as well as Ash Shihr Terminal, are working.

However, Gard said that the capacity of all operating ports may be limited due to a potential unavailability of cranes and a potential lack of fuel supplies and other basic services.

It added that all vessels trying to enter Yemeni ports also need to anticipate postponements and delays “due [to] the special entry conditions in force and multiple inspections carried out by the Saudi Arabian-led coalition”.

Gard also warned that the situation is subject to fast change and that people are advised to warn their ships’ crews of the volatility, alongside assessing the risks involved before going into or transiting Yemeni waters.

The missile incident, which was reported approximately 30 miles northwest of the Hanish Islands in the Southern Red Sea on April 3, saw a projectile penetrate a commercial tanker’s hull and cause minor damage above her waterline.
