Sudden death brings Napier port changes

A review of the Port of Napier’s management structure has been initiated following the sudden passing of its chief financial officer John Matheson and related resignation of chief operating officer Chris Bain.

With Mr Matheson having died soon after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, Mr Bain is understood to have reviewed his own future and decided to take time out before “embarking upon a new challenge”.

Port of Napier chief executive Garth Cowie described the passing of Mr Matheson as “tragic” and extended sympathies to his family. Mr Cowie also paid tribute to Mr Bain who is credited with having made a significant contribution during a “huge growth period” for the port.

With Mr Matheson’s role being covered via finance manager Warren Young and an external contractor while the port sought a full-time replacement, Mr Cowie said he was “taking the opportunity to look at how the current management structure fits with what we are wanting to do perhaps going forward”.
