As part of the program Sydney Ports will implement key actions identified by Sydney Water, conduct a water conservation staff awareness program and strive for a 15% improvement in the efficient use of water. Also Sydney Ports has launched a new permit system for the supply of fresh water to all vessels entering Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay to preserve precious water resources. The system allows a maximum limit of 25kL of potable water to be taken up by vessels. Those vessels requiring additional water need to submit a separate permit indicating the amount required and a justification for exceeding the limit. These requests are approved on a case by case basis by Sydney Ports. The water supply is monitored during and following the uptake of water to ensure all vessels abide by the permit conditions.
• Sydney Ports has recently formed an internal group to focus on creating a philosophy of sustainability among staff members by targeting resource use and waste generation. Following a comprehensive audit process the team aims to launch a set of green initiatives aimed at focusing staff on reducing water and energy consumption and decreasing waste sent to landfill. The reductions made by these initiatives will be tracked against a set of baseline data for the financial year of 2006-2007 and aims to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the organisation’s direct emissions
