Local news sources reported that up to ten vessels in the Kaohsiung Harbour broke loose from their moorings during high seas caused by Typhoon Meranti.
One of those vessels was a newbuild ordered by Canada’s Seaspan, it broke from its mooring lines at local yard CSBC and drifted to Kaohsiung’s sixth container terminal where it destroyed two quay cranes.
The port-operator Taiwan International Ports Corporation suspended entries and departures into the harbour on September 9 at noon. It reported that a total of ten vessels which broke loose had been secured within four hours.
It has been estimated that 233,000 homes had suffered power outages because of the typhoon, and water supplies were also affected.
Typhoon Meranti was classified at the top of the scale, category five, with wind reaching speeds of up to 230 miles per hour. It is the strongest typhoon since Super Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines in 2013.
