Stevedoring trouble costs Valencia

The president of Valencia Port Authority, Aurelio Martínez, said that problems with stevedoring and other port services have led to the port losing around 2% of its annual container traffic, equivalent to 80,000 boxes, this year.

He also claimed that “there are international investors that are waiting to see what will happen to stevedoring legislation before deciding whether to invest in Spain or not”.

“We’re putting our immediate future at risk; nothing lasts forever,” he warned, stressing that last year Valencia was Spain’s and the Mediterranean’s leading port.

Of the various problems threatening the port, he warned of the “excessive protectionism” of the G-20 countries, overcapacity in the container industry in terms of both vessels and containers, and the virtual oligopoly that dominates the sector.
