WFO announced its recommendations during the first WFO Conference on Marine Litter: Public and Private Solutions will Make a Change towards Blue Growth, which took place in Brussels on 7 March 2013.
The organisation’s recommendations include the improvements and adaption of plastics waste management facilities, support beach clean ups, promote resource efficiency through educational programmes, create value of the plastics waste streams and raise awareness of marine litter, among others.
Bernard Merkx, project manager of WFO, said: “Our ten recommendations form the basis for essential actions, by both public and private actors, needed in order to tackle the growing issue of marine litter. We hope that these recommendations will be taken heed of by national authorities, industry and the general public so that greater coordination can take place in the fight against marine litter.”
The conference was attended by over 120 delegates from the fishing community, national authorities, EU institutions and educational institutes, as well as the plastics industry and NGOs.
