Standing firm on nitrogen emissions

Antwerp Port Authority and the Port of Rotterdam Authority want to see stricter nitrogen oxides emission standards for new built vessels on the North Sea and the English Channel from 1 January 2016.

The two largest ports in Europe have made clear that they do not support a proposal to postpone this already agreed regulation by five years, because it’s in line with the sustainability policy of both port authorities.

The environment committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is due to discuss the proposal at the beginning of April 2014.

Under the proposal, newbuild ships’ engines will need to emit 80% less nitrogen oxides than existing vessels.
