STS bunkering gears up at German port

A major LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operation has been carried out at the Port of Emden in Germany.

LNG bunkering

Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co said 1,500 metric tonnes of LNG was delivered from 108m long LNG bunker vessel Engie Zeebrugge to Volkswagen’s 200m long Siem Confucius car carrier. The operation took around eight hours.

“Modern shipping requires modern choices in the ports. I am pleased that in Emden we can offer shipowners and the port industry the right conditions for switching to other fuels,” explained Holger Banik, managing director of Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG and of JadeWeserPort Realisierungs GmbH & Co. KG.

LNG-powered vessels have been able to receive STS bunkering at the Ems Pier since November of 2019.

The Port of Emden has had LNG experience since 2015. MS Ostfriesland, the ferry to the Island of Borkum, owned and operated by AG EMS, runs on LNG. Here, the bunkering process is truck-to-ship. AG Ems is currently having another ferry converted to LNG propulsion.

Volkswagen ships vehicles from Europe overseas via the Port of Emden. Siem Confucius‘ route runs directly from Emden to Halifax, Canada.
