APM Terminal Barcelona is working with automotive expert Applus+ IDIADA on an adaptation project, which will allow the port to better serve ships and cruisers powered by the low-emission fuel, where engine modifications have already been completed and in-field testing is imminent.
The project, which is also being partnered by APM BEST Terminal and Natural Gas Services, includes analysis of the technical feasibility of adaptation, supply logistics, security measures, emissions monitoring and the realisation of tailor-made training for carrier personnel.
LNG focus
At a meeting in February, heads of the Department of Powertrain d’IDIADA explained how the design and adaptation of the 600-litre LNG tanks that will be installed in each of the straddle carriers.
This project, which began in 2016 and has a total budget of €1.22 million, is part of the CORE LNGas HIVE Project, led by ENAGAS and co-financed by the CEF program of the European Union. It is one of the actions envisaged in the port’s Plan for the Improvement of Air Quality.
The Port of Barcelona has clearly set out its commitment to sustainability which is closely aligned to the development of cruise activity.
It is working to equip itself with all the necessary infrastructures and facilities for supplying LNG and is currently performing pilot projects to demonstrate and promote the viability of LNG across its operations.
