The planned new facility is to be built to the southeast of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon). This is the first known joint-venture project involving foreigners that has been approved by the Vietnamese government. Another project at the same port is being developed by PSA and APM Terminals. SSIT will have a 600 metre long berthing line. Annual capacity will be 1.35m teu. Investment required has been estimated at $160m.
SSA in Vietnamese venture
The Vietnamese government has approved the establishment of a jointventure between Saigon Port and SSA Marine to manage the SP-SSA International Container Terminal (SSIT) at Cai Mep-Thi Vai. Saigon Port, a subsidiary of Vietnam National Shipping Lines Corporation (Vinalines), already operates five terminals in southern Vietnam, amounting to 3,000 metres of berthing line.
