Expressions of interest have been received from 11 companies who wish to take forward construction and operation of an international container transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam. The tender prompted three international groupings to reply: Dubai Ports International; a consortium headed by the National Ports Authority of South Africa, including partners Hyson Harbour Technologies, Boskalis International and the Konkan Railway Corporation; and the UKs Beckett Rankine & Co. In addition, local interest was generated by Larsen & Touro, Afcons Infrastructure, ABG Heavy Industries, IL& FS/Hilico, the Hili Company of Malta with Punj Lloyd, Adani Exports, East West Airlines and Gammon India.
PC REMBRANDT, BMT’s ship handling training and familiarisation software, was used to determine the wind and tidal conditions under which vessels will be able to enter and depart from the port with and without the support of tugs. The company also set out the strategy for beacon, buoy and light use in the area.
A selection will be made by the end of July for what will eventually become a $994.97m project.
