Sustained strong demand for Australian coal has led to a need for capacity expansion at the terminal to meet the needs of existing and potential mining customers.
A Chinese consortium has been given the go-ahead to develop the proposed international container transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam in Kerala on the southwestern Indian coastline. Kaidi Electrical Power Co and China Harbour Engineering Co, in partnership with Mumbaibased Zoom Developers, put in a techno-economic bid for the US$975m project which beat that of Mumbai-based Gammon India. The terminal project is expected to consist of three phases, with the first being the most costly at US$405m.
