Wait and see at Maldives Port

Port officials in Male are taking a wait and see approach to development plans post a recent coup in the Indian Oceans Maldives.

“The new government has given assurances that all projects to improve the lives of Maldavians will go on,” Hussain Hilmy, chief executive of Maldives Port told

in an interview.

Currently, the government is looking for a foreign investor to help either develop or relocate Male port to a nearby atoll, said Mr Hilmy. “Four or five” Asian companies have expressed an interest, he added.

“The best option is to shift the port as soon as possible,” said Mr Hilmy, pointing out it was the only way to avoid the port congesting in the near future.

Male moves 53,000 teu and 498,000 tonnes of breakbulk cargo each year, mainly vegetables, steel and timber. Exports are only 17,000 tonnes.

Last year, growth was 10%. “We are hoping for the same growth this year,” said Mr Hilmy.
