“They run a system where they bring the empties in from the outside depot and deliver direct to the side of the ship so they don’t go through the main stack at all; but this works because they use only local roads. You cannot run a system that is at the mercy of traffic delays. If this system involved the Cork ring road, it simply wouldn’t work.”
Striking the balance at Southampton
DP World Southampton successfully adopted a block stacking methodology five years ago and has recently increased the size of its empties park so it can accommodate about 10,000 teu at any one time.
