The suggestion was put forward by the president of Spain’s National Ports Authority at a seminar held in Huelva, bringing together representatives from the commercial and maritime traffic field.
Both sides have been working on the idea for some time through a variety of agreements, including one resulting in co-operation between APBA and the ports of Tanger Med and Tanger City.
The cluster concept is reinforced by statistics, which show that more than 5.3m passengers and 1.2m vehicles annually make the crossing between the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa and Tangier. In addition, around half of commercial trade between Spain and Morocco, amounting to 276,000 trucks, passes through the Straits of Gibraltar.
A body set up by the European Commission noted that the Spain-Morocco link via the Port of Algeciras was one of five major export corridors, linking the European Union with neighbouring non-EU countries.
