About 1,500 dockworkers stopped working at Lima’s Callao port which handles a third of Peru’s exports and 70% of imports, Wilder Esteves, the union’s general secretary, said. Port workers are aiming for higher wages and early retirement benefits after Peru increased annual exports of metals and fishmeal fourfold in the past six years, to an estimated $31bn last year. The stoppage was criticised by shipping companies and export organisations who said the disrurption would cost several million dollars a day in lost exports and dent Peru’s reputation.
