Wanganui council regains port

Ownership of Wanganui Port has returned to the district council in a NZ$2.75m (US$2m) deal with former port leaseholder, River City Port (RCP).

The development ends a bitter five-year legal wrangle between the entities – RCP accused of not appropriately investing in and maintaining port infrastructure and the council accused of blocking its plans for development.

RCP has maintained there is a commercial future for the North Island port. However, the council is reportedly targeting use as a recreational marina only.
