The report by PA Consulting, is its second benchmark study and is a snapshot of four global manufacturing companies – Siemens, GE, Alstrom and ABB.
The companies were assessed in three areas – product portfolio, strategy and organisation and transparency and operational performance, then they were given a score out of 100.
Edmond Cunningham, greening business expert at PA Consulting Group, said: “This year’s study showed that each company in the sample improved on its early 2011 score with both ABB and Alstom gaining momentum in making their businesses greener and improving their presence through eco-friendly products.”
Siemens came out on top as the greenest company in the sample – the company has increased its analysis of the environmental impact of its products, from 49% in 2011, up to 88% in 2012.
ABB came in second place and is in the lead in terms of reducing energy consumption by 11%, greenhouse gas emissions by 4% and water consumption by 13.5%.
In third place was GE with an improvement of 1.3% in its energy savings, an improvement of 6.4% in its greenhouse gas emissions and 30% in its water consumption since 2009.
Although Alstrom remained in fourth place, the report revealed that the company has shown the most improvement in its environmental strategy since early 2011 by increasing green awareness throughout the company and making its environmental information more widely available to the public.
