Benefits of electric RTGs

Rubber tired gantry cranes (RTGs) are infamous for driving up costs at ports because of their high fuel consumption meaning a higher cost to the environment.

German electric RTG (E-RTG) crane specialist Conductix-Wampfler say that in order to reduce costs more and more port operators are moving from diesel to electric in a move that has already saved millions of Euros and tons of CO2 around the globe.

“There is a great demand for E-RTG systems and this will continue to grow”, said Claus Burger, director of the E-RTG business unit at Conductix-Wampfler.

He added: “We expect that in the future diesel-driven cranes will only be used where there is no power supply for technical reasons”.

The company has recently secured new contracts for the electrification of RTGs in China, Korea and Japan.

Before the end of 2011, eighteen cranes at the Turkish ports of Yilport and Malport will have gone electric.

Conductix-Wampfler also signed a major contract this year with APM Terminals and will gradually be converting the majority of the group’s 400 RTGs to electric – this is currently being realised at the Malaysian port Tanjung Pelepas.
