BSC seeks to improve environmental management

The IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental Management aims to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills to key staff and management with responsibilities to develop and implement environmental management and sustainability solutions in line with legislation.

It’s not sector specific or aimed at any particular industry or business in particular, but it’s helpful because it aims to address key issues relevant to all businesses across all sectors.

Howard Dawes, portfolio manager – training, BSC, said to GreenPort: “It is clear that all organisations including those in the marine sector need to have a good awareness and understanding of the wider environmental and sustainability issues that both directly and perhaps indirectly affect them.”

“For ports in particular, with increasing evidence of a changing climate and the potential for increasing storm frequency and severity, businesses need to be more proactive in developing strategies, policies and practices that will secure their business operations into the future.”

The environment and the wider sustainability issues obviously present both risks and opportunities for business. Mr Dawes added that having trained, competent personnel in post with the knowledge, understanding and skills to support the development and implementation of environmental sustainability strategies will ensure a long term future for the business and its stakeholders.

The entry level course covers not only the fundamentals of environmental management – effective compliance, good practice, pollution prevention and management systems – but also introduces wider environmental sustainability issues relevant to practitioners and businesses.

In terms of wider business strategy, the course also considers improving environmental performance in the supply chain and internal change management issues in support of longer term sustainable development objectives.
