Antwerp port house design certified sustainable
Excavations have begun on the new port house building at the Port of Antwerp – it has also received BREEAM certification for the project confirming the sustainability of the new design.
Work is being undertaken on the first phase of the project, the underground carpark, by main contractor Interbuild NV.
The British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) certification has categorised the Port House project as “very good” in terms of sustainability. A definitive certificate will be issued once the project has been completed and will take into account the actual construction.
During the next few months, the site at quay 63 will be transformed by the excavation for the underground car park and then the foundations for the new building will be laid.
The two large concrete support structures will be built next, and then the steel structure of the upper part of the building will be delivered in six modules which will be hoisted into place and attached to one another.
Construction of the port house is scheduled to take 33 months in all and the port authority is set to move into its new headquarters at the end of 2015.
