Break-bulk app for efficient container handling

The Port of Antwerp has launched a new break-bulk application which it says should lead to more efficient greener handling and help save time and money for its customers.

Cubix, which is newly integrated into the Antwerp Port Community System (APCS), aims to make double handling a thing of the past speeding up communication concerning cargoes and allowing for a more efficient cargo flow.

John Kerkhof, APCS, said: “We want to further develop the Antwerp community platform so as to achieve far reaching digitalisation of the port processes, giving port users maximum transparency regarding their freight flows. The focus will be on integrating customs applications and hinterland connections.”

Cubix enables the freight forwarder to make a single declaration concerning the consignment for which a unique reference is issued. This reference number is then used by all subsequent parties so that the forwarder is able to see the status of the freight at all times in total transparency. As an added benefit, customers can also be supplied with evidence of customs clearance.

The business model behind Cubix is that all parties who are involved in using the application also share in the cost. But the intention according to Mr Kerkhof, is not to get rich from the process, but to return all of the proceeds back to the community.

At the moment a pilot project is running with ArcelorMittal Logistics, FEDNAV and NHS. But the intention is to perform a more general roll-out in the future with APCS going into production with several parties this summer.
