Green workshop at Next Generation Conference

Part of the overall three day conference, the workshop will feature presenters explaining how fuel can be saved, maintenance costs reduced and engine life extended. Fast moving sessions will focus on informal discussion and industry experience from experts such as Lloyds Register and DNV GL.

A highlight will be the ‘Hour of Power’ concept which enables vessels to run in and out of port for an hour using battery power alone. Presenters will also discuss high energy battery installations, including Lithium-ion and the latest MCA Marine Guidance note.

Conference organiser, John Haynes, said: “It is great to have US Lithium-ion battery manufacturer XALT Energy and BAE Systems HybriDrive on board, as their extensive expertise highlights the next generation electric, battery and hybrid technology.”

“This is not just green energy for the sake of it. Hybrid is now a viable option and we are focussing on simple and viable business cases for the next generation vessels of all sizes,” he added.

The conference brings together international experts to highlight the potential use of innovative power and propulsion systems. The aim is to identify a range of solution for workboats, pilot boats, wind farm support vessels, survey vessels, scientific research craft, fishing vessels, superyachts, patrol craft, military and unmanned craft.

In attendance will be 20 speakers covering three phases: ‘Here and Now Technology’, ‘Next Generation Systems’, and ‘Innovation and Future Possibilities’.

The second conference day ends with a guided tour of the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute facility located at the new £140m Boldrewood Innovation Campus at Southampton University.

Next Generation runs from 26-28 April at the Grand Harbour Hotel.
