Peninsula has completed the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation at the Port of Sagunto in Spain, expanding the availability of alternative marine fuels within the Valencia port cluster.

The operation took place on 15 September and was carried out by Levante LNG, Peninsula’s LNG bunkering vessel. LNG was supplied to Thor Highway, a car carrier operated by Japanese shipping company K Line.

The delivery marks a new milestone for LNG bunkering infrastructure in the region and demonstrates growing demand for alternative marine fuels among international shipowners operating in the Mediterranean.

Peninsula holds licences to supply LNG as a marine fuel at the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandía. The company said the expanded coverage will allow it to support vessels across a range of segments as demand grows for lower-carbon marine energy solutions.

The Sagunto operation was completed through coordination between the Port Authority of Valencia, the Maritime Authority, the Pilotage Service and Civil Protection teams.

Their involvement supported the safe execution of the bunkering operation and ensured it was carried out in line with operational and safety requirements.

The company said the successful delivery strengthens the role of the Valencia port cluster in providing alternative fuels to shipping and expands the options available to vessels calling at ports along Spain’s Mediterranean coast.

Peninsula is also developing its role as a supplier of bio-LNG alongside conventional LNG. The company views both fuels as part of the maritime sector’s transition towards lower-emission operations.

The completion of the Sagunto operation adds another location to Peninsula’s Mediterranean LNG bunkering network and follows the company’s wider expansion of marine fuel supply capabilities in the region.

The company said its LNG and bio-LNG operations are intended to provide shipping customers with flexible and reliable energy supplies while supporting efforts to reduce emissions from maritime transport.
