DP World has deployed 55 electric yard tractors at its Busan terminal in South Korea, replacing LNG-powered vehicles as it accelerates efforts to reduce emissions from port operations.

The new tractors represent approximately 36% of the terminal’s 154-vehicle yard tractor fleet. Each electric vehicle is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 70% compared with the LNG-powered tractor it replaces, supporting the terminal’s transition towards lower-carbon container handling.

Anders Dømmestrup, chief operating officer, Ports & Terminals, Asia Pacific, DP World APAC, said: “Deploying these electric yard tractors marks an important milestone in DP World’s efforts to reduce emissions from terminal operations. It shows how we can make progress on that goal while continuing to deliver the safe, efficient and reliable services our customers depend on.”

The tractors transport containers around the terminal, undertaking frequent stop-and-go movements. Their electric powertrains offer quieter operation, smoother acceleration and more consistent performance, while having fewer moving parts than LNG-powered alternatives. These characteristics are expected to reduce maintenance requirements and help improve equipment availability.

Replacing combustion engines will also reduce the use and disposal of engine fluids, helping minimise the risk of leaks and their potential environmental impact.

The investment supports DP World Busan’s efforts to manage operational emissions as a participant in South Korea’s Emissions Trading Scheme. It also aligns with the country’s wider ambitions to develop low-carbon logistics and more environmentally sustainable port operations.

The deployment builds on electrification initiatives across the company’s international network, including the Port of Brisbane on Fisherman Island in Australia, Manila South Harbour in the Philippines and Laem Chabang International Terminal in Thailand.
