Modern Terminals and CLPe advance port electrification
Modern Terminals and CLPe will develop an electrification roadmap to accelerate Hong Kong’s maritime decarbonisation efforts
Modern Terminals and CLPe have teamed up to explore low-carbon technologies and develop an electrification roadmap for container port operations in Hong Kong.
Under the agreement, the companies will examine onshore power systems for container vessels, battery-swapping solutions for container tractors, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and mobile equipment, and power infrastructure for electric barges.
“The partnership between Modern Terminals and CLPe marks a significant milestone in the green transformation of the container terminal operations, and a landmark moment for Hong Kong’s maritime industry to accelerate port electrification and maritime decarbonisation,” said Amy Chan, deputy secretary for transport and logistics and commissioner for maritime and port development.
The collaboration supports Modern Terminals’ target of eliminating direct greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 2030. Group managing director Horace Lo said advances in battery technology had made electrification a key long-term pathway, alongside alternative green fuels.
He added that achieving the company’s decarbonisation objectives would require strong support from the power sector, while also helping shipping lines and barge operators transition towards lower-carbon operations.
CLPe managing director Ringo Ng said: “Decarbonising the maritime sector is vital to Hong Kong’s competitiveness as an international maritime centre.”
He said the company was committed to advancing Hong Kong’s development as a green and smart port, with the partnership aiming to deliver integrated solutions that could establish new benchmarks for sustainable port operations.
The memorandum of understanding also aligns with the Hong Kong SAR Government’s strategic initiatives to accelerate maritime decarbonisation and strengthen the city’s position as an international maritime hub.
Following the signing, the companies will undertake feasibility studies and technical assessments of the proposed initiatives. These will inform a phased electrification roadmap designed to support Modern Terminals’ long-term sustainability goals and guide investment in port infrastructure.
