Borg Havn automation targets sustainability
Kalmar will carry out the automation retrofit of two Kalmar rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) for the Port of Borg Havn IKS to improve productivity, efficiency and sustainability.
The project involves upgrading the two manually operated cranes to Kalmar AutoRTGs, including all related automation software and hardware as well as new cable reels with fibre optics for low-latency data communication. The RTGs will also be retrofitted with the Kalmar SmartRail laser-guided gantry steering solution and Kalmar will supply two remote-control desks for controlling the machines.
Pål-Erling Johnsen, technical manager at Norway-located Borg Havn IKS, said: “We have, together with Kalmar, established a good technical solution for retrofitting our RTGs. Our aim is to get the cranes into a condition which will enable remote operations with good endurance. The work done so far is very promising, and we are looking forward to a fully satisfactory solution.”
Remote move
Borg Havn made the decision to move away from its current mode of operation using reachstackers and implement remotely controlled RTGs to handle container movements as it wanted to extend capacity at the terminal by increasing stacking density. The retrofit is expected to enable operational sustainability, while increased efficiency also means the machines will use less fuel and produce less emissions.
Miikka Haapa-aho, director of automation retrofits at Kalmar, part of Cargotec, stated: “This kind of conversion demonstrates that it is possible for terminals of all sizes to start their automation journey without major changes to infrastructure and equipment.”
The deal includes a one-year maintenance and support agreement for the automation software.
