Hydrogen powers port
A new project aims to generate renewable hydrogen for operations at a Spanish port.
Spanish/Japanese renewable energy business group, Univergy Solar will coordinate the ‘Julio Verne’ project to generate and dispense renewable hydrogen for logistics operations at the Port of Vigo.
Julio Hidalgo, head of the hydrogen division at Univergy Solar, highlighted the “importance and responsibility associated to (the) Green Hydrogen Project ‘Julio Verne’ at Vigo port, because it will be a role model” for other clean energy projects.
Joint delivery
Univergy solar will deliver the project jointly with a group of promoters including Quantum, Soltec, ANFACO and Buran Habitat.
The project arises from the collaboration in recent months between the port authority of Vigo and companies and entities such as Aclunaga, CTAG, EnergyLAB, Neuwalme and Exportrends.
Hydrogen generation projects from Univergy use both alkaline electrolysers and PEM membrane technologies. These technologies are used indistinctly depending on the placement and size of the projects. Moreover, for projects linked to isolated installations and other applications at industrial and residential level, fuel cells will be used in order to satisfy generation and stability for its clients.
The roadmap for green hydrogen in Spain foresees a first phase installation of 600MW of capacity in electrolysers for 2024 and, at least, 4GW for 2030. The EU Hydrogen Strategy aims to install at least 6GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers in the EU by 2024 and at least 40GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers by 2030.
