Crystal ball-gazing for TT Club and McKinsey

There is practically “a religious divide” among container industry leaders as to whether the fundamental driver of value in the sector for the next quarter of a century is going to be trade or the digital realm.

That’s according to Peregrine Storrs-Fox, risk management director at the TT Club — whose new report published in conjunction with McKinsey & Company, Brave new world?: Container transport in 2043, made the finding from a study of over 30 industry leaders and experts.

Mr Storrs-Fox was speaking during a joint presentation about the report with McKinsey’s Luuk Speksnijder, who is associate partner at the company, at this year’s TOC Europe.

The report’s four chapters cover “Where we have been”, “Where we are going”, “Four visions of the future” and a conclusion on preparing for the next quarter of a century.

The visions it offers focus on the areas of “digital reinvention”, “digital disruption”, a “third wave of globalisation” and “‘Peak container’ and consolidation”.

The study also identifies six means by which value could potentially be improved in container transport across the next 25 years: greater economies of scale, flexibility, supply chain reliability and predictability, consolidation and integration, automation and productivity and environmental performance.
