H2 fuel cell for RTG crane
A hydrogen fuel cell power pack (FCPP) developed for a rubber tyred gantry crane has been successfully verified.
Mitsui E&S Machinery Co. (MES-M) is developing the pack for the Transtainer crane using a grant from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization. Integration and performance tests were carried out with Mitsui E&S Power Systems before installation on the crane for further testing and optimisation.
“As the push for decarbonisation intensifies, MES-M is aggressively investing in zero emission technologies to achieve the marine and port industry goal of decarbonisation,” said Ichiro Tanaka, president and chief executive of MES-M.
“The FCPP is a major milestone to achieve this.”
This is the first application of the integration with Toyota Motor Corporation´s fuel cell and large high-pressure hydrogen fuel tanks in a non-automotive application worldwide. The zero-emission Transtainer crane is expected to be ready in and adapting the technology for other applications is under consideration.
MES-M is also working on developing ammonia fuel marine engines and fuel supply equipment at its Tamano Works as well as constructing a hydrogen supply facility with a target completion date of June 2023.
