Thames shore power

The Smartdocks are being installed between Westminster and Dartford by Net Zero Marine Services (NZMS), providing emissions-free charging and other services to power six million passenger trips and move four million tonnes of cargo per year by 2030.

“Our projects will deliver first-of-a-kind shore power infrastructure on a tidal river for commercial applications, and demonstrate our commitment to reducing emissions and noise and improving air quality across the whole Thames Estuary,” said NZMS director, Miles Cole.

In another first for the capital’s push for decarbonisation, Oceandiva London – a floating events space – will become the UK’s first carbon-neutral vessel to benefit from this innovative technology when it takes to the water later this year.

Powered by 100% renewable energy, Oceandiva London is supported by onboard solar panels and a back-up biofuel generator for longer excursions. Smart technology will allow the ship’s engineer to track and monitor all energy sources used, along with water consumption.

Following the installation of shore power, NZMS will turn its sights to producing green marine hydrogen and is currently working with river authorities and other stakeholders on the design of a 140 acre site on the Thames.
