The 1,832 panels are capable of generating 1.18 GWh of electricity, enough to power around 200 homes for a year.

Estefanía Soler, head of sustainability at BEST, said, “These efforts contribute to further reducing the terminal’s carbon footprint, with BEST’s emissions being 65% lower than conventional manual terminals.”

BEST was inaugurated ten years ago and is a benchmark in terms of sustainability within the terminals of the Hutchison Ports group, which operates 52 terminals in 26 countries.

The terminal already uses mostly electric cranes and is working with the Barcelona Port Authority to electrify its quay and provide shore-based power for visiting vessels.

This solar panel initiative is part of BEST’s sustainability strategy and reinforces its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 of the 2030 Agenda on ‘Affordable and Clean Energy’.

BEST has also invested in rail travel, increasing the use of rail in the Port of Barcelona from 3% to 20% in the past ten years thanks to its own terminal and rail operators and investment in intermodal terminals in northern Spain.
